The Boston Red Sox could have another veteran pitcher in their starting rotation in the near future.
Boston tried to bolster its starting rotation ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline by acquiring James Paxton in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. It seemed like a good move at the time, but he ended up missing some time due to a calf injury.
However, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox are preparing to make some additions and are “moving” to sign veteran pitcher Rich Hill.
“Sources tell us Rich Hill is on track to sign with the Red Sox,” Bradford said.
Hill is a familiar face to Red Sox fans, having grown up near Boston and already starred for the franchise three times, having served as both a starter and reliever in Boston and would likely bolster the starting rotation if the deal goes through.
The Red Sox are in contention for an American League wild-card spot, but they have a hole in their starting rotation where Paxton was, and Hill could easily fill that hole late in the innings. Hill may no longer be at the top of the rotation, but he's a 19-year veteran who can help get innings.
Boston needs starting pitching and Hill is the best option available on the open market, so a move seems too good to be true at this point.
