When Boston Red Sox star infielder Trevor Story was sidelined with a shoulder injury in early April, it seemed like he might miss the entire 2024 season. Story's injury is expected to last about six months, leaving him open to a return later in the season or in the postseason. According to Ian Brown of MLB.com, Story could return to the Red Sox lineup before the end of the 2024 season.
“Trevor Story will take the field for BP on Monday. It's looking increasingly likely he'll play this season,” Brown wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The Red Sox currently sit 5.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees in the American League East and Boston still has a chance to clinch an AL Wild Card spot, and the 31-year-old could certainly play a big role down the stretch if he returns.
Story, a two-time All-Star, has had some frustrations since joining the Red Sox beyond his injury troubles, but he has never played more than 100 games in any of his three seasons with Boston. It's hard to consistently produce when you're constantly battling injuries.
The limitations of the story are what make his potential return especially intriguing.

The Red Sox are currently 1.5 games out of the American League wild card spot, trailing only the Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals, but Boston has firmly emerged as a contender for the spot.
Story was once considered one of the best right-handed hitting infielders in MLB. Could his numbers have been inflated somewhat due to the high altitude of Coors Field? Possibly, but that doesn't mean Story wasn't a good player.

The Rockies have had many infielders on their roster since being announced as an MLB expansion team, but not many have posted three 20-20 seasons and two 30-20 seasons. His combination of power and speed makes him a versatile player who will be a threat to any pitching staff.
Story may not be the same player in 2024, but he's still only 31. Story's limitations show he has the ability to make a dramatic impact on any franchise.
