The Russian dictator had previously encouraged the politician to visit Moscow. Slovakia's leaders declared on Wednesday that they “will gladly accept the official invitation of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to take part in these important celebrations and will take part.”

In a separate statement, the Slovak Prime Minister's Office said Fico spoke by phone with US President-elect Donald Trump and that “most of the conversation focused on the war in Ukraine.”

Fico, like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has openly criticized the European Union's policy of supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggressors and imposing sanctions on aggressor countries. After taking office, he took a pro-Russian line and immediately halted military supplies to Kiev, accusing him of prolonging the war.
In April, when the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava was celebrated, there were no European Union or US diplomats in the Slovak capital, but Russian and Belarusian ambassadors were. The Slovak leader was harshly criticized by the opposition after he addressed Russian media again in October, criticizing the EU's approach to the Ukraine war and Russia's isolation.
