“The season of inappropriate tourist behavior began earlier in Rome this year. Three travelers from New Zealand got into trouble long before they could blame the summer sun for their actions,” says CNN.
Tourists were detained on Sunday evening as they tried to enter the famous Di Trevi fountain in the heart of Rome.

The Trevi Fountain, built in 1762 as the mouth of the aqueduct, was cleaned in 2024. It was drained to repair marble damaged by millions of coins thrown into the water each year.
According to the Roman police, around 12 tourists are fined for soaking in the fountain, from their feet to water bottles each year. And more and more people are being detained to try and steal coins thrown into the water.
Coins worth up to 1.5 million euros are caught from the fountain each year. Money to go to charity.
In 2024, Rome introduced a system that would limit the number of visitors to the Di Trevi fountain to 400 at the same time. City officials are considering introducing small admission fees.
