At a press conference broadcast by the Kremlin press office after the summit of the Eurasian Supreme Economic Council held near St. Petersburg, President Putin indicated his readiness to resume the transfer of Russian gas to European Union countries through our country.
As he claimed, “Poland has closed the route through its territory. There is an active route there, no one collides with it, there are no explosions, it works, it is enough to press a button. That's all, it will pass' the territory of Poland. It is called YamalEurope and cuts exactly across the territory of Poland. Please turn it on tomorrow. I will deliver. ”
Transfer of Russian fuel. This is a gas pipeline running through Poland
The claim that Poland has stopped transferring Russian Blue fuel is false. In early May 2022, President Putin himself signed a decree imposing sanctions on 31 gas companies from European Union countries. Among them were the owners of Europol GAZ, a section of the Yamal-European gas pipeline that runs through Poland.
This move will lead to Russia's Gazprom being subject to sanctions at the end of April 2022, as stated in an analysis prepared by Simon Kardas and Michał Kęrzeski and published by the Center for Oriental Studies on May 13, 2022. Poland's actions towards independence from Russia are a response to the situation and provide energy raw materials. This decision was ultimately dictated by Warsaw's policy of pushing for tighter sanctions against Moscow.
The study's authors had already noted that Russia's use of these tools was arbitrary.
“Moscow authorities are using this method to create or strengthen divisions in the West (such as introducing restrictions targeting individual entities that only target some countries), and to ensure that the sanctions imposed are not effective. We also plan to independently determine the scope of the In OSW analysis.
President Putin wants to divide European countries. Russia-Ukraine agreement ends
As argued by Wojciech Jakovic, an analyst at the Center for Energy Security, the proposal put forward by President Putin on Thursday is an attempt to divide European countries and exploit differences between the two countries. For the next time in history, Putin will try to apply a “divide and rule” policy to Eastern European countries, luring them with the false promise of “cheap gas from Russia.”
“Despite the official policy of the European REPowerEU, which envisages the exit of all Russian raw materials by 2027 at the latest, it is known that some European governments wish to continue using Russian gas. “There is,” the expert pointed out.
This proposal, mentioned by President Putin, is based on the fact that there are still countries in Europe, such as Hungary and Slovakia, that want to receive Russian gas, but there are problems in sending this raw material there. Not a drop of blue fuel has flowed through the Nord Stream 2 pipeline since the explosion in September 2022.
At the end of this year, Russia and Ukraine's agreement on gas transportation through the territory expires. An extension is possible, but it would not be in the interests of Moscow, which wants to squeeze its attacked neighbor economically as quickly as possible.
– Slovakia and Hungary will face problems if the flow of gas to Ukraine stops. And they undermine EU sanctions policy and independence from Russian gas. These are Gazprom's last customers, Wojciech Jakovic explained, emphasizing:
– We must not forget that even if we want to help them, it is still possible to establish conditions of supply through Ukraine. Putin just wants to skip it. That would be his success.
President Putin made a proposal to Poland. “This is not an attractive offer.”
This is not the first time such an attempt has been made. Long before the 2014 annexation of Crimea, the Russian government was trying to deprive Ukraine of the opportunity to make money by transporting Russian gas. An example of this would be the Peremička pipeline project, which runs through Belarus and Poland to Slovakia.
“We refused then, and we were right,” the expert insisted. In his opinion, that remains the case.
– This is not an attractive offer. We are developing infrastructure that will allow us to use the Yamal gas pipeline for completely different sources of supply, for example from Norway. Agreeing to such a deal would mean reversing the path we are pursuing domestically and in Europe to abandon Russian gas. It would be a blow to Ukraine's interests and a blow to the drumbeat of pro-Russian forces in Europe, including the Slovak prime minister, who eventually visited Putin and helped him emerge from political isolation. Wojciech Jakovic said.
