Baby steps. 6-6 is the best record since 7-5 in 2014. There has been improvement, but Greg Schiano is 9-27 in the Big Ten (3-6 in 2023). Will that be different in 2024, thanks to a very generous schedule?
2024 Rutgers NCAAF Featured Areas:
QB play. Rutgers averaged 16.5 points per game in the Big Ten Conference. Their QB was hitting less than 48% of the time so a change was needed. Ahsan Kariakmanis is from Minnesota.
He's a career 53% player but didn't really stand out with the Gophers. The current coordinator coached him in Minnesota, but the position remains a sore spot. As long as RB Monaghan is healthy, the run game will be a strength. A 5.2 pass percentage per carry is impressive when everyone knows he can't pass.
Their run defense is decent, but star DB Max Melton is off to the NFL. Rutgers has good defensive fundamentals and their numbers should remain pretty strong (they have a lot of seniors). Defensive teams have a hard time scoring, so they need strong kicking. Rutgers has a solid penalty kick.
Rutgers University Football 2024 Projected Win Total Predictions
Maybe 6-6? I'd like to get more specific, but I don't like the QB situation and the offense doesn't work if the RB gets injured. I respect Schiano and his defense and the home games are pretty easy. Rutgers is avoiding the top 4 or 5 teams in the Big Ten, so 6-6 might be low. The offense will decide if that's the case.

2024 Rutgers University football schedule and featured games
Game 3 will be at Virginia. It won't be an easy game, as the Hokies will be looking to get revenge for last year's 35-16 loss. Their Big Ten Conference opener will be against Washington, a game where Rutgers can shine, as they have a new coach and a major roster shake-up.
Rutgers is winless against Wisconsin. They'll have to prove they can win games like this when they host the Badgers, just like they did against Washington. The same goes for hosting UCLA's new staff. A good defense will stifle the passing attack.
Rutgers will need to overcome this to be successful. They have two more winnable home games against Minnesota (like Wisconsin, Rutgers has never beaten the Gophers) and Illinois (1-1 in close games in 2020-21). The final will be at Michigan State. Who will win, Rutgers' offense or the Spartans' defense?
Rutgers 2024 Football Expert Handicap Tips
Schiano's teams tend to be better as road dogs. Even on a year when SU went 1-4, they were 2-2-1 and 1-draw ATS. Right now, I think the 10/5 game at Nebraska will be a low-scoring one. I'd bet on 9/28 against Washington and 10/26 against USC.
