Samsung has announced new AI features for its smart appliances, including new AI-generated wallpapers for select refrigerators and an AI upgrade for its Bixby voice assistant. The updated Bixby will be rolling out to five Samsung Bespoke appliances starting August 27.
According to the company, the AI-generated wallpapers will be featured in Samsung Family Hub refrigerators launched in the US and South Korea from 2022 onwards. To create a wallpaper, users choose a theme from seven categories and one of six art styles. Once a new wallpaper is created, it can be pasted on the refrigerator's cover screen or whiteboard, or saved in an album for later use. A Wi-Fi connection is required, and users can only create up to five wallpapers per day.
An improved Bixby can understand complex commands, remember previous conversations, and answer troubleshooting questions. In one example Samsung gave, that means you could ask your washing machine what time dinner is and have it finish the laundry an hour before. Another suggests asking Bixby about error codes or why your refrigerator is ticking.
However, the Bixby upgrade will only be available on select Samsung appliances launching in 2024. This includes the Bespoke 4-door refrigerator with AI Family Hub, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, and the AI WindFree Gallery standalone air conditioner.
