The epicenter of the shock was located between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos in the Aegean Sea, where increasing seismic activity has been recorded since the end of January. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 17 km in the area of the Cecrolado Islands.
Greek public broadcaster ERT has announced that the earthquake is magnitude 5.3. According to some sources, the shock magnitude was 5.2. There have been no reports of victims or damages.
Greek seismologist Gerassimos Papadopoulos said the recorded shocks “closed a small gap in optimism.” Previously, authorities and experts expressed “cautious optimism” about the earthquake situation in the area.

On Thursday, local authorities announced the extraordinary situation in the area. From February 1st, over 3, over 800 shocks have been registered in the region, with the strongest of which being 5.2 in size.
Schools will remain closed until February 14th due to uncertainty regarding seismic conditions on Santorini, Amorgos, Anafafi and Ios islands. When the shock began to worsen, residents and tourists began leaving the island on a massive scale.
