From 2025, Belgrade will be the largest city in Europe with free public transport available to everyone. “No one will have to pay for a ticket anymore,” insisted Aleksandar Sapik, the mayor of the Serbian capital.
– Public transport in Belgrade will be free for everyone from January 1, 2025, Mayor Aleksandar Sapic announced. This will make the Serbian capital “the only city in Europe with a population of over 500,000 people to have free public transport.”
A similar solution was adopted in Estonia's capital Tallinn, France's Montpellier, and Luxembourg, but none of these cities has a population of more than 500,000 people. The entire Montpellier area has over 800,000 inhabitants. Belgrade itself is currently home to approximately 1.7 million people.
Belgrade has free public transport for everyone
“I came here and said that within a few years Belgrade will have the best public transport system in this part of Europe,” said Aleksandar Sapich. – No one will have to pay for tickets anymore – he stressed.

The mayor also announced that by the end of 2025, the city will eliminate all buses older than two years. New trams are expected to arrive in the capital by 2026, and new trolleybuses by the end of 2027. “This means a complete refurbishment of public transport vehicles,” Sapik said.
Belgrade's public transport currently offers 90-minute, 24-hour, weekly and monthly tickets. It can be purchased through a dedicated application, by SMS sent from the number of a Serbian operator, or from vending machines located inside some public transport vehicles.
