The atmosphere in the Serbian parliament was tense from the beginning. Opposition representatives wanted to vote for a vote of confidence in the government instead of working on next year's budget. The conflict came to a head when rival politicians tried to tear down the flag of the ruling majority, while the opposition pulled the flag with their hands covered in red paint, a symbol of demonstrations linked to the Novi Sad tragedy. I peeled it off.
Security forces had to intervene to separate lawmakers, with the speaker ordering the session to be suspended and accusing the opposition of trying to “seize power by force.” In response, Dragan Žilas, leader of the opposition Freedom and Justice Party, said: “We have just carried out a coup d'état in Serbia on the orders of President Aleksandar Vučić.''

In a recording posted online, Vučić expressed concern about the “brutal behavior of some MPs” and the “intimidation they carry out every day across the country.”
