Seven people in South Korea were injured, including four seriously, after a fighter airplane accidentally abandoned eight bombs in a civil district during a lively shooting exercise.
The incident involving the Air Force KF-16 plane took place around 10:04 am local time (01:04 GMT) in the city of Poconon, near the border with North Korea.
Only one bomb would have exploded. A bombs elimination team is working on the safe layout of the other seven other unplodced bombs.
While live shooting shells sometimes land near civilian residences, they rarely cause injuries.
According to local media, two people have suffered fractures on the neck and shoulders.
“Our KF-16 (fighter plane) has dropped abnormally 8 MK-82 bombs shells. He landed outside the shooting field,” Air Force said in a declaration to the BBC.
He added that he was investigating the incident and apologized for damage, adding that he would provide compensation to affected people.
A building and church houses were also damaged as a result of the incident.
The Ministry of Defense said that Thursday’s training was linked to a joint exercise with American forces.
South Korea and the United States is expected to perform combined exercises from March 10 to 20 – the first since the return of US President Donald Trump to the White House.
