Italy has banned the use of neutral symbols from a gender perspective. The Ministry of Education shows that neutral graphic signs work with unclear rules and violate the rules of Italian grammar.
Reuters noted that the ministry’s decision could raise tensions between the right Wing government and LGBTQ groups.
“Using graphic characters incompatible with requirements such as Christmas
And SZWA (ə) is against language standards and threatens to violate the transparency and uniformity of institutional communications” – we read the Ministry of Education’s statement.
The Italian government seeks to present it as an organization that defends traditional values. When Giorgia Meloni took office in 2022, she was upset when President Del Condiglio, the official title of prime minister, said she wanted the article “IL” of men to take precedence rather than women “LA.”

Italian, like other languages derived from Latin, has nouns and adjectives that take the form of female and male. For multiple nouns that cover both sexes, the priority has a male form.

“Some people recognize this as an expression of male dominance and support the introduction of neutrals in terms of gender for nouns such as stars,” the Reuters agency points out.
However, in the past, Accademia della crusca – an institution that cares about Italian principles, it has suggested that it avoid official documents of innovative sexually neutral symbols.
