A German ski jumper has raised the issue of pay disparity in men’s and women’s sports in the media. Serena Freitag revealed in an interview with BR24 that she received a fairly specific award from the organizers for qualifying for the World Cup, which will be held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on December 30th. .
“I received a partner bag with shower gel, shampoo and four hand towels,” the athlete said.
For comparison, she recalled that the winner of the men’s preliminary round, Austrian Jan Herl, received a check for 3,000 Swiss francs (about 14,000 PLN).
The athlete was disappointed in the award. “That could cause frustration.”
In response to the allegations, the International Ski Federation (FIS) announced that unlike the men, qualifying winners would not receive prize money.

FIS said in a statement that as part of their prize money, the athletes also received a voucher for a weekend spa treatment. CNN reporters who asked FIS about the incident said the organizers “certainly had good intentions, but we understand that they may have caused frustration and created a negative impression.”
The International Ski Federation explained that women’s ski jumping is a relatively new sport compared to men’s competitions, attracting less audience interest and less marketing revenue, and therefore less prize money.
In an entry on the X website, Her Sports, an organization dedicated to promoting gender equality in sport, said the disparity in prize money “highlights the inequalities that still exist in the world of sport today”.

The participation fee for women’s competitions is much lower. Awards will be given to the top 20 participants in each contest.
The winner will receive 3.8 million. Francs (more than 17,000 PLN), the following players: 3,040 (almost 14,000 PLN) and 2,280 (more than 10,000 PLN). In the women’s competition, there are no prizes for qualifying to participate.
