Detained South Korean President Jung Suk-jeol has again refused to appear for questioning in connection with an investigation into the imposition of martial law. The court received a request to extend the detention period, in which investigators accused Jun of coup d’état.
The third day of interrogation by the investigators of the Office for the prosecution of corruption among senior officials (CIO) should be at 10 o’clock local time (2 p.m. in Poland). “The president will not appear at the CIO today,” Seok Dong-hyeon, a lawyer and long-time friend of Jung Suk-jeol, told Yonhap news agency.
On Friday afternoon, the CIO, as previously announced, applied to Seoul’s Western District Court for a formal arrest warrant, accusing Jun of masterminding a coup and abuse of power in connection with the imposition of a short-lived martial law. December 3. The CIO cited the seriousness of the alleged offenses and the risk of their recurrence as reasons for seeking the sentence.
