The website of the economic newspaper “Cinco Dias” reports that on Tuesday, a strike continued at Madrid's Barajas airport for several days, which could lead to the cancellation of up to 2,000 flights. The workers participating in the strike demand, among other things, the improvement of working conditions.
Employees who operate flights to Barajas are protesting the human resources policy of Skyway, which is in charge of air traffic control at the capital's airport.
They are opposed among others: the absence of a collective agreement and the limitation of the employee's rights. They also noted that in the 11 years since the last wage indexation, their wages have significantly lost their purchasing power.
Impact on five thousand trips
According to trade unions, the protest, which is expected to continue until Saturday, may involve 5,000 people. scheduled trips in the period before Christmas, including canceled 1.5 to 2 thousand flights.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is the largest airport in Spain and is located in the northeast of the capital. It serves more than 60 million passengers every year.
Another strike
It is yet another strike in Europe this week, the impact of which will be felt by passengers. Finland's national airline was forced to cancel about 140 flights on Monday, including European, intercontinental and domestic connections, due to pilot protests. Pilots of Finnish aviation companies demand, among other things, an increase in wages.
