SHELTON, Conn., Aug. 26, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Spine Wave announces the immediate launch of the Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Interbody Device featuring TiCell® Nano Advanced Surface Technology. The Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Interbody Device is an interbody device for transforaminal (TLIF) and posterior (PLIF) lumbar interbody fusion with all-titanium construction, biplanar expansion, easy and fast post-expansion implantation, and advanced surface technology. This groundbreaking, immediately available new product significantly strengthens Spine Wave's posterior interbody fusion offering and is expected to be a key driver of Spine Wave's growth.
The Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Interbody Device is the device of choice for TLIF and PLIF procedures. The all-titanium implant features simple, easy-to-use instrumentation and a biplanar taper for ease of insertion. The implant expands in both the cranial-to-caudal and medial-to-lateral directions, maximizing endplate-to-implant surface contact and providing ample space for grafting and radiographic visibility. The system is integrated with Spine Wave's popular GraftMag® Graft Delivery System, making post-expansion grafting fast, easy, and high-volume.
The Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Interbody Device also features Spine Wave's patented, proprietary advanced surface design, TiCell® Nano Advanced Surface Technology. The TiCell® Nano surface is created using both nanosecond and femtosecond lasers to create a hierarchical surface structure. The nanosecond laser creates a coarse, microporous texture intended to enhance fixation between the implant and the vertebral endplates, while the femtosecond laser creates sub-micron and nanoscale features designed to replicate the natural geometry within the osteoclast resorption lacuna. “We were impressed with Spine Wave's laser surface technology,” said Dr. Barbara Boyan, Executive Director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Institute of Engineering and Medicine. “We were particularly impressed with its ability to mimic the topography left by osteoclasts in preparation for bone growth.” TiCell® Nano Advanced Surface Technology can be applied to any titanium implant substrate, including machined and 3D printed designs. The Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Interbody Device is the first Spine Wave implant to feature TiCell® Nano Advanced Surface Technology, with more planned for the future.
Professor Boyan will be providing more information and data on TiCell® nano-advanced surface technology as a faculty member of the online program “Biomimetic Implant Surfaces and the Potential of Nano + Femtosecond Laser Texturing,” hosted by Orthopedics This Week, on September 4, 2024 at 7 pm EDT. Other expert program speakers include Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, MBA, Richard H. Rothman Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Chair of Orthopedic Surgery at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and President of Rothman Orthopedics at Jefferson Health; Paul C. Celestré, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon at Norton Leatherman Spine Center; and Scott McLean, MD, Vice President of Research and Development at SpineWave, Inc. “The combination of the Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Interbody Device and the GraftMag® Graft Delivery System is an excellent surgical solution for my TLIF and PLIF procedures,” said Christopher P. Gallati, MD. “I am confident in using this system because it meets my clinical requirements perfectly, the dual taper design allows for easy insertion, and the biplanar expansion ensures a secure fit and fill of the intervertebral space to achieve the desired amount of lordosis.” He adds, “The GraftMag® Graft Delivery System makes implantation quick and easy, and the TiCell® Nano Advanced Surface Technology is attractive because it is designed to facilitate short-term fixation and provide an excellent setting for achieving bony union.” Dr. Gallati is a board-certified neurospine surgeon at the Brain and Spine Institute at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“Spine Wave's launch of the Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Device continues and strengthens our leadership position in the expandable device market,” said Laine Mashburn, Executive Vice President, Global Marketing and Business Development. The Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Device addresses an important clinical need very well and offers compelling features that spine surgeons value. The TiCell® Nano Advanced Surface Technology featured on the Exceed® Biplanar Expandable Device is an important and promising platform technology for Spine Wave.”
