Sweden officials captured ships on Sunday suspected damage to the seabed cable. According to VESSELFINDER data, the VEZHEN cargo ship, which raised the Malta flag, was defended by the Swedish coastal Guard to the Swedish waters.
The ship left the Port of Ustiruga in Russia on Friday. So far, the authorities have not officially confirmed whether Vegen is subject to the investigation. “I can confirm that we are on the scene, but we will not comment on the purpose of the strategy,” said Matthinas Lindholm, a spokesman of the Swedish coastal security squad, reported by Afumbledet newspapers.
Cable damage between Latvia and Sweden. The survey is underway
The sea cable connecting Sweden and Latvia was damaged early in the morning. “There is a reason to believe that cables are seriously damaged by external acts,” said Vineta Spreogain, a public relations officer in Latvian Public Broadcasting Station, which owns a cable.
The Swedish Agency (Säpo) began investigating the case as potentially dangerous for Sweden’s national interests. The agency said in a statement, “Sapo is investigating at least because there is a possibility that a serious crime targeting a part of Sweden is involved.”
Baltic Sea. The tension over the seabed infrastructure increases
The damage to the cable between Latvia and Sweden is an accident related to the important infrastructure of the Baltic Sea. Similar cases have occurred in recent months, and concerns about local safety are growing.
The Sweden and Latvian troops are monitoring the situation in cooperation with the NATO Allies and analyzing the potential threats to submarine infrastructure.
