Israel has deployed troops in a buffer zone on the Syrian border. This is a response to the events of the past 24 hours and the regime change in Damascus. There was also shelling of military facilities. Tel Aviv issued a partial statement on the matter. “(Our) National Defense Forces are currently assisting United Nations forces in repelling the attack,” it read.

“Armed attackers” allegedly attacked the post, the Times of Israel reported. Reuters also reported on the Damascus shelling, citing Lebanese and Syrian sources. The agency also pointed to shelling on the Khalhara air base in southern Syria, where Syrian soldiers were taking shelter between Saturday and Sunday night.

Citing two regional security sources, the editorial team added that the airport was allegedly bombed by a jet “likely to be Israeli.”

Israel has not commented on the attack on the Syrian facility. Reuters said the shelling may have been aimed at preventing extremist military groups from seizing a weapons warehouse. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said his country “extends the hand of friendship to all Syrians who wish to live in peace with Israel, but we will not allow hostile forces to gain a foothold on our borders.”

The politician added that the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government was a “historic day.” On Sunday morning, rebels from the Islamic group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham announced the “fall of the regime” of Syria's former dictator. Insurgents seized state television and government buildings in the capital Damascus.
