Syria. Russia calls emergency session of UN Security Council
The United Nations Security Council will meet on Monday. AFP news agency, citing diplomatic sources, said the meeting was convened urgently at Russia's request. The topic of the meeting is expected to be the current situation in Syria. Twenty-four years later, rebels overthrew Bashar al-Assad's authoritarian rule. An emergency meeting was convened by Russia. On Sunday morning, Syrian rebels announced the capture of the capital Damascus and the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. The president exercised autocratic power over the states for 24 years.

Assad was supported by, among others, Moscow, Iran, and Lebanon's Hezbollah. This is the latest phase of a civil war that has been going on since 2011.
On the night between Saturday and Sunday, Syrian rebels announced they were entering the capital. Earlier, Reuters and CNN reported on fighting in the city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that government forces had withdrawn from Damascus airport.

“Our forces have begun entering Damascus,” the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) reported on social media. HTS leads Syrian rebel forces that have been carrying out attacks against President Bashar al-Assad's regime for a week and a half.
