Photos published by Maxar show at least two Russian AN-124 aircraft, one of the world's largest transport aircraft, at the Hmaymim air base on Syria's Latakia coast.
– There are two AN-124 heavy transport aircraft at the airport, both with their nose cones up and ready to load equipment, Maxar commented.
– A Ka-52 attack helicopter is being dismantled nearby, possibly preparing for transport. The American company added that members of the S-400 air defense force are also preparing to leave their previous deployment locations at air bases.
Russia may act in consultation with the new government
Meanwhile, British news channel Channel 4 reported that a convoy of more than 150 Russian military vehicles was seen moving in orderly formation along the road. Russia appears to have reached an agreement with the new Syrian authorities to allow Russians to leave the country safely, the agency said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on these reports.
On Sunday, Syrian rebels overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime, which had been in place in recent years largely thanks to Russian support. Russia invested huge sums of money in the dictatorship and established bases in Syria, which allowed it to expand its influence in other countries in Asia and Africa.
