TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Police Department has announced it will deploy SoundThinking's ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot detection technology.
The new technology will cover two square miles of Tacoma starting in the fall, allowing law enforcement to identify and locate active shooter incidents through real-time alerts.
Shift personnel will pinpoint the exact location of the shooting, and TPD said the technology will allow them to arrive on the scene faster, identify and rescue victims, interview witnesses and gather evidence.
He also said it will help apprehend armed and dangerous individuals. ShotSpotter supports TPD's violent crime reduction initiative.
The first rollout will be in the city's Hosmer neighborhood.
“The Tacoma Police Department will be hosting informative community meetings to announce details about the upcoming deployment of ShotSpotter,” the department said. “These meetings will provide an in-depth understanding of how ShotSpotter operates and the important role it plays in enhancing law enforcement efforts to fight crime while ensuring the safety of both officers and residents.”
TPD encourages members of the community to attend the meeting and learn more about ShotSpotter.
