PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Temple Health is hosting a Healthy Block Party, an event aimed at meeting people who normally wouldn't go for a routine doctor's checkup.
Alexander Cooper pricked his finger and quickly discovered that his blood sugar was elevated, a sign that he might develop diabetes in the future.
“It was scary,” Cooper said. “It was shocking.”
Among the many free services offered by Temple University's mobile van, diabetes testing will be part of Saturday's block party.
“The reason we go out into the community is because it helps us address issues that go undiagnosed because people are afraid to go to the doctor,” said Tonya Bello, a nurse practitioner at Temple University. “So we do things that sometimes require us to bring a doctor to that person.”
Bello said mobile units will be making the rounds around North Philadelphia, where people will be individually tested.
“We will be doing this citywide,” Bello said, “and also offering blood pressure testing and glucose testing indoors.”
Bring health services to underserved areas and reverse high morbidity and premature mortality.
“We are presenting solutions to the people,” Bello said.
The Healthy Block Party will be held at Temple University's Women and Family Campus on Wyoming Avenue.
Special bonus – There will be lots of free giveaways at the block party, including water bottles and gun locks.
“Accidents can happen, so if you have a gun in your home, make sure it's locked,” Bello said.
In addition to addressing the epidemic of gun violence, the truck will also highlight North Philadelphia's high maternal and infant mortality rates and encourage pregnant women to seek prenatal care.
“The disparities exist for women of color and they are endless,” Bello said.
This Temple University team is breaking down barriers to bring needed medical care to more people, and the block party, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, will also feature free school supplies and fun activities for kids.
