The 18-carat Tiffany pocket watch belonged to Captain Arthur Rostron. The captain was sailing the Carpathia when Titanic sent out an SOS signal after hitting an iceberg. Rostron decided to change course and was able to save 705 people from the sinking ship.
The watch was a gift from the three widows of an influential businessman who died in the 1912 Titanic disaster. This was an expression of gratitude for the captain's courage.
“On April 15, 1912, Captain Rostron, with the deepest gratitude and gratitude to the three survivors of the Titanic, Mrs. John B. Thayer, Mrs. John Jacob Astor, and Mrs. George D. Widener. ” – this is the inscription on the back. of the clock.

On Saturday, the unique item passed into the hands of a private collector, on whose behalf a group of auctioneers purchased it from Wiltshire's Henry Aldridge and Son. The watch sold for 1.56 million pounds, or more than 8 million zlotys.
The pocket watch thus became the most expensive souvenir in Titanic history. The previous record was recently set in April. Later, a watch belonging to the shipwreck's richest passenger, John Jacob Astor, was auctioned for a total of £1.175 million (over PLN6 million).
The dead passenger's watch broke a long-standing record for a member of a ship's orchestra playing the violin during a disaster. The instrument was auctioned in 2013 for 1.1 million pounds (approximately 5.7 million zlotys).
