Most regions of India will experience an intense heat wave this summer with temperatures above normal in most of the country, said its meteorological service.
Mr. Mohapatra, head of the meteorological department of India, said that several states would suffer more days of heat waves than usual this year.
Many states have already declared average weekly minimum temperatures above normal 1-3C in February.
Hundreds die every year in India due to the scorching heat. Sectors and agriculture also suffer because the availability of reduced water.
In 2024, India recorded its hottest day at 50.5 ° C on May 28 in the city of Churu of the Western Rajasthan State. The country’s Ministry of Health awarded 143 deaths to heat waves between March 1 and June 20.
Independent experts, however, believe that the country is under the count of deaths caused by extreme heat. The Heat Watch 2024 report said that 733 deaths due to heat strokes were reported in 17 states between March and June 2024.
This year, states like Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha could see up to 10 to 11 days of heat waves, Mohapatra said at a press conference on Monday.
“From April to June, most regions of northern and eastern India, central India and the plains of northwest India should experience two to four days of heat waves that normal,” he added.
Last year, Mr. Mohapatra warned that the heat waves in India could become a more regular event if the action was not taken to tackle extreme conditions.
India is the third global greenhouse gas transmitter, based strongly on coal to generate energy for its needs.
“Human activities, the increase in population, industrialization and transport mechanisms lead to an increased concentration of carbon monoxide, methane and chloro-garders,” said Mohapatra last year.
“We put in danger not only ourselves, but also our future generations.”
