The Netherlands has launched a new phase in its fight against illegal immigration. Six months of border controls have begun on the border between Belgium and Germany. As announced, they will be “random” for now.
“Border guards will now be able to require documentation from everyone crossing the border and refuse entry to anyone who does not have documents allowing them to visit or live in the Netherlands,” Dutch media reported.
Dutch troops are deployed to the border. The country fights against illegal immigration
But this is not the only action, with the Brussels Times reporting that the Royal Gendarmerie will carry out inspections of roads and railways on the border between the two countries. The military operation began on Monday.
At the same time, authorities assured that the restrictions would not cause traffic jams at border crossings or affect the economic situation of border communes.
The Dutch government says these are “decisive measures” aimed at combating human trafficking and illegal immigration. This position was echoed by Dutch Minister of Immigration and Asylum Marjoline Faber, who said that the actions taken were not “symbolic” and would definitely have consequences. This was in response to critics who said that too few staff were allocated for testing.

There are approximately 840 border crossings in the Netherlands, located on both motorways and forest roads. Where soldiers and border guards are placed depends on current needs.
The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany are all part of the Schengen Area, which allows member states to move freely across their borders. However, some countries, including Germany, have recently decided to restrict traffic at their borders due to the problem of an “influx of immigrants.”
