Recent scientific research has confirmed the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, a sacred cloth believed to have been used to encase the body of Jesus Christ, and released several AI-generated images. Building on this groundbreaking discovery, researchers have harnessed the power of artificial intelligence to create high-resolution images based on faint traces left on the shroud.
Italian researchers have used new X-ray technology to date the Shroud of Turin to between 55 and 74 AD, confirming its authenticity as a 2,000-year-old relic. (The Shroud of Turin. (Photo: X/ @trad_west_))
A photo currently going viral on the Internet is one of the most compelling glimpses into what Jesus Christ looked like.
New research confirms authenticity of the Shroud of Turin
The Shroud of Turin, a linen cloth bearing a faint image of a man, has long been revered by Christians and followers of Jesus as Jesus' holy burial cloth, but its authenticity has been hotly debated, with many claiming it is a medieval forgery.

A new study published in Heritage magazine casts doubt on these claims, presenting new X-ray dating evidence that dates the Shroud to around 2,000 years before the time of Christ.
According to the Julian calendar, the Bible story, and the beliefs of the time, most people believe that Jesus was crucified around 33 A.D., which would have happened 1,992 years ago.
AI shows “the true face of Jesus”
Recent research has overturned the long-held belief that the Shroud of Turin is a fake, paving the way for advanced artificial intelligence to recreate in minute detail the facial markings on the Shroud.
The Daily Express was provided with an image by Midjourney AI that offers a glimpse of the face that may be on the Shroud. The image shows a man with long beard and hair, similar to the usual depiction of Jesus. The body is covered in cuts and bruises, which is consistent with what we know about the crucifixion.

Another image shows a man with wounds across his bare chest, suggesting he was tortured to death. The Daily Mail's Shard AI-generated image shows a clothed figure with very deep-set eyes, long hair and facial hair.
Using a clever AI tool called GenCraft, The Sun has depicted Jesus with hazel eyes and a soft complexion, with clear signs of fatigue beneath his tired eyes.
What did the research find?
Italian researchers have used new X-ray technology to determine the age of the Shroud of Turin. Extensive X-ray testing has shown a clear match between the Shroud and a piece of cloth found at Masada in Israel, dating from 55 to 74 AD, said team leader Dr Liberato De Caro.
“The experimental results are consistent with the hypothesis that the Shroud of Turin is a 2000-year-old relic,” the study states.
He also pointed out that previous studies that had attempted to use carbon dating to date the Shroud to between 1260 and 1390 were unreliable: “Samples of the cloth are usually subject to all kinds of contamination, which cannot be completely removed from dated specimens.”
