HOUSTON – Veteran linebacker and special teams ace Zeke Turner joined the Texans' practice squad on Wednesday, according to league sources.
Turner played defensive back at the University of Washington but went undrafted and was once selected as an All-Rookie special teams player for the Arizona Cardinals.
Turner, 28, is a 6-foot-2, 214-pound Maryland native who played last season for the San Francisco 49ers.
He recorded 83 career tackles and one forced fumble.
As a rookie, he successfully blocked a punt against the San Francisco 49ers.
He regularly plays over 80 percent of the special teams snaps and is a skilled tackler.
The Texans are planning to sign former Buffalo Bills and Ohio State wide receiver Xavier Johnson to their practice squad, according to a league source.
Johnson, 25, is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound former running back who is now a wide receiver for the Buckeyes.
Johnson, a former walk-on, caught 26 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns at Ohio State and rushed 12 times for 146 yards, including a 71-yard run against Indiana and a touchdown against Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
The Texans' practice squad is expected to include rookie defensive end Solomon Byrd, a seventh-round pick out of the University of Southern California, and rookie defensive tackle Marcus Harris, a seventh-round pick out of Auburn University, according to league sources.
The Texans also reinstated former first-round draft offensive lineman Cameron Irving to their practice squad, according to league sources.
The Texans have signed veteran offensive lineman David Sharpe, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers, to their practice squad, according to a league source.
The Texans signed wide receiver Johnny Johnson III, who scored a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in the final preseason game and was on the practice squad last year, to their practice squad, according to a league source.
The Texans have signed offensive lineman Killian Zierer to their practice squad, according to a league source.
The Texans have signed fullback Troy Hairston to their practice squad, according to a league source.
He made the 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie two years ago before missing last season with a back injury that required surgery.
