High waves have been hitting Peru for several days. Prohibition of going to the sea has been imposed in 91 ports. The raging water sank the fishing boats and the levees were damaged.
Extremely high waves hit the northern and central coasts of Peru. The disaster disrupts the marine industry and threatens the local population. The Navy announced on Sunday that a ban on sailing has been imposed in 91 ports.
“We do not recommend going to sea while this phenomenon continues,” the Navy said in a statement.
In the province of Piura and north of Tumbes, the waves were more than three to four meters. Rough water destroyed and sank fishing boats. According to local media, floods and beaches have also been damaged.
Trapped fishermen
In the city of Talara, more than a hundred fishermen were stranded in the sea – they could not return to the port due to high waves. As local media reported on Monday, 30 fishermen were rescued.
Waves are expected to remain in the coastal area until at least Wednesday, according to a report issued by the Peruvian Navy on Friday.
