At least 13 people died after an Indian navy speedboat lost control and hit a ferry off the coast of Mumbai, a navy spokesperson said.
Three navy personnel were among the dead, while more than 100 people were rescued, Maharashtra state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.
Footage of the incident posted online showed the speedboat spinning around before hitting the ferry, which then capsized.
The Indian Navy said there was an “engine malfunction”.
The private ferry was heading to the Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination, when it was hit by the speedboat.
“A navy craft undergoing engine testing lost control and collided with a passenger ferry,” the navy said in a statement, adding that it regretted this “tragic loss” of human life.
A passenger on board the ship told ABP Majha news channel: “The speedboat crashed into our boat and water started entering our boat and it overturned. The driver us asked to wear life jackets.”
“I swam for 15 minutes before being rescued by another boat,” explained the passenger, who did not want to identify himself.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The boat accident in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for a speedy recovery of the injured.”
