Freezing cold in Northern Europe
It is unusually cold in the European part of Russia. In the town of Apatity, Murmansk region, the temperature dropped to -38.8 degrees Celsius from Tuesday to Wednesday night. It got a little warmer during the day. As of 9 o’clock local time, the frost was -29.6 degrees Celsius.
But it wasn’t the only place it was this cold. The temperature in the town of Sabkoski in northern Finland at 4 a.m. on Wednesday was -38.9 degrees Celsius, the worst frost so far this winter in Finland.
Furthermore, forecasters from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) have warned that the coming days will be similarly cold, with temperatures likely to reach around -40 or -30 degrees, according to the X website. I read it on FMI’s profile.
We cannot exclude the possibility that local thermometers will read below -40 degrees Celsius.
Snowstorm in Scandinavia is gradually subsiding
Meanwhile, neighboring Sweden and Norway are still suffering from the snowstorm that blanketed much of Scandinavia.
More than half a meter of snow fell in some places in Norway on Tuesday. The capital Oslo was paralyzed, buses were stuck in snowdrifts and roads were covered in thick snow.
There were no trains running between Hallingskeid and Myrdal due to the amount of snow that covered the tracks. Services between Bergen and Oslo have also been cancelled.
On Wednesday, much of Norway was still covered in frost, with positive temperatures only on the coast, where Rogaland and Hordaland recorded temperatures of 3-4 degrees Celsius below zero. Local forecasters say frost is expected to continue into the next day, but the weather is starting to calm down in the south of the country.
According to the forecast, the weekend, especially Friday and Saturday, will still be cold but much milder, with no heavy snowstorms.
Sweden is also seeing slow positive changes in this regard. A snowstorm still exists in most parts of the country, but it is not as strong as the previous day. Many areas will see snow throughout Wednesday, with rain and snow expected in the south. Thursday will be mild, and from Friday onwards, high pressure will bring in some sunshine, but there will be some frost.
