Three Michigan universities are rated the best in the world, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2024-2025 Best Global Universities rankings.
The publication ranked 2,271 institutions around the world, taking into account their national and international research reputation, the number of citations to their research and publications, the amount of international collaboration, etc. A detailed methodology can be found here.
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor was ranked 19th in the world, ranking among the top 25 in many fields, including Arts & Humanities, Biology & Biochemistry, Heart & Cardiovascular Services, Clinical Medicine, Economics & Business, Education, Endocrinology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, Oncology, Physics, Psychiatry, Public Health, Radiology, Social Sciences, Space Sciences and Surgery.
The ranking was bolstered by its reputation for area studies, which placed it in the top five.
Michigan State University was ranked 123rd. The university's teaching and research programs were ranked fifth internationally, and its plant and animal sciences programs were also ranked in the top 20.
As a research institution, the University of East Lansing is ranked in the top 50 in the United States and 63rd internationally.
Wayne State University in Detroit is the other Michigan university to make the top 500, ranking 466th in the world. The three universities form the University Research Corridor, working together to generate $24 billion in economic impact through research and innovation last year.
