Tom Cruise has often played the super-competent guy who saves the world over the years, but now that he's moved from Paramount to Warner Bros., he's playing the super-competent guy who saves the world again.
On Friday, Deadline released a brief synopsis of Cruise's upcoming, currently untitled film, which he's producing alongside Alejandro G. Iñárritu. According to the outlet, the film will focus on “the most powerful man in the world” as he brings about a global catastrophe before being tasked with proving his worth and stopping it. It's a pretty ominous premise, not least because it's unclear what that catastrophe is, or if he even intended to bring it upon the world in the first place. And why is Cruise's character the most powerful of the rest? We'll just have to wait and find out.
Along with a synopsis, Deadline also revealed the actors attached to the film. Supporting roles include Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), John Goodman (The Righteous Gemstones), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Bones & All). Another contender is Riz Ahmed (Nimona), who is said to be in negotiations to join the project. Like much of the film, their story roles are being kept closely guarded.
Whatever Inarritu and Cruise's film is, it's going to be a big deal. Cruise partnered with WB in January to develop and produce a slate of films, both original and franchise, and as the first movie in this new endeavor, it will mark a key point in his career. This could lead to him revisiting fan-favorite movies, or he could try to challenge himself with new material. Either way, we're intrigued to see what he does next on the big screen.
