The Atlanta Falcons and Emory Healthcare, the official team medical provider for the Atlanta Falcons, are teaming up to host a free hands-only CPR and AED training session called “1 Trained at Every Game” on Saturday, September 7. The session will allow local residents to receive proper training to respond to medical emergencies.
The session begins at 10 a.m. and will last approximately 40 minutes. Registration is required.
Led by healthcare experts from Emory University, the “One for Every Game” training aims to prevent deaths from sudden cardiac arrest, the leading cause of death among adult and student-athletes nationwide.
Following the January 2023 incident in which Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered an on-field cardiac arrest, medical professionals realized the importance of providing cardiovascular training to a wider audience.
“We decided that 'train one person per game' means having one person available to perform Hands-Only CPR on someone having a heart attack. Combined with AED experience and training, we can make sports at all levels safer,” says Amy DeRosa, dean of Emory's Department of Physical Therapy.
“We also want to spread awareness among the public,” DeRosa adds. “Many people don't know that hands-only CPR chest compressions are just as effective as traditional CPR. That awareness, along with training and experience, will definitely make sports safer, especially at the youth level.”
Hands-Only CPR training prepares bystanders to respond to a cardiac arrest event even if they are not familiar or comfortable with standard CPR, which includes both chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing.
Participants will be eligible to receive a training certificate that meets Georgia High School Association coaching requirements.
Training will take place at the Home Depot Backyard located next to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The day will include raffles for game tickets and autographed Falcons merchandise, as well as appearances from former Falcons player Freddie the Falcon and the Falcons cheer team. CPR and other heart health activities will also be available.
“One Trainer Per Match” is a free event and open to anyone age 10 and older, but registration is required. Register for the 10am-1pm time slot. Hands-on CPR and AED training will take approximately 40 minutes. Parking passes will be provided in the Silver Deck.
