Transnistria's leader Vadim Krasnosielski signed a decree on Monday that could introduce a “state of economic emergency.”
Special rules will apply in the region for 30 days due to the risk of disruption to Russian gas supplies, the NewsMaker portal reports.
The emergency measures concern the protection of the use of gas and energy resources and the prohibition of energy exports. The legislation now needs to be approved by local councils. The matter is scheduled to be debated on December 11th.
Concerns over Russian gas shortages stem from Ukraine's decision not to extend its contract to transport Russian gas to Europe beyond 2024. The current contract expires at the end of 2024. Meanwhile, Moldova is being supplied with gas from Russia under a contract valid until October 2026.
Transnistria. There is a possibility that there will be a shortage of gas from Russia. they introduce a state of emergency
As reported by the Kiev Independent, a scenario in which Gazprom actually stops gas shipments to Europe via Ukraine would cost the company billions of dollars, but the giant company is willing to take this risk. It should be taken into consideration. Additionally, Gazprom will supply up to 5.7 million cubic meters of gas to Moldova starting in 2022, which is less than the country's winter demand. From the end of 2023, all raw materials will be sent to Transnistria, from which Moldova will receive most of its electricity.
Several gas pipelines run through Ukraine, allowing gas to flow from Russia to Hungary, Moldova, Romania, and further west and south.
The decision to end Russian gas shipments was announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal in October. The politician explained that the main goal is to completely block the transport of Russian gas to Europe, which would lead to a significant reduction in the profits the country receives from the sale of raw materials.
Remember that Transnistria is an autonomous region of Moldova that is not internationally recognized and remains heavily influenced by Russia.
