1. Some highlights from Donald Trump's first appearance since the Democratic nominees were announced. Trump attacked Harris and Walz, agreed to three debates, and claimed the crowd that gathered before the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol was larger than the crowd that gathered for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
2. There's no watering allowed this weekend as Stage 2 of water restrictions continues. As you may know, violators will be penalized. Public Works Director Gary Janzen said, “We're not going to be proactively going after people who are running irrigation systems when they shouldn't be. Our goal here is community education and the value of conservation throughout our community.”
3. There's a sign thief in Minnesota that has nothing to do with baseball or football. Police arrested a woman who they believe stole yard signs, real estate signs, and political signs. She had over 240 signs, valued at over $1,000, which is a felony. To combat sign theft, especially with the election approaching, some people are putting airtags on their signs.
4. Next time you're trying to win a prize at a claw machine, you might want to make sure the stuffed animal is dead. Pennsylvania game wardens were called to a mini-golf course after an employee found a live groundhog lounging among the stuffed animals at a claw machine. The groundhog was safely removed, but not before spotting its shadow, meaning six more weeks of summer.
5. If you haven't cleaned your microwave in a while, it might be time to do so. Not everything that gets burned in the microwave is dead. A microbiologist from the University of Valencia in Spain and his colleagues swabbed 30 microwaves and cultured samples in petri dishes, discovering a variety of creepy organisms, including bacteria and what they call extremophiles, that can survive the radiation, high temperatures, and extreme dryness found in microwave ovens. Curiously, all of the microbes they found were still cold in the center.
And it's becoming a trend.
