In recent years, the NFL and politics have become increasingly intertwined, with players speaking out on global issues. Like it or not, politics is a part of sports, and the NFL and its stars are no exception. As the 2024 US Presidential election approaches and social media becomes more accessible, athletes are not shying away from sharing their thoughts and opinions with the public, regardless of the possible political ramifications.
On Wednesday, Miami Dolphins veteran long snapper and 2019 CFP national champion Blake Ferguson denounced the White House's official Twitter account after it called for a ban on assault weapons. Debates over gun rights and the Second Amendment continue to divide Americans, especially in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump.

On Wednesday, the White House's official Twitter account posted a graphic calling for a ban on assault weapons, much to the displeasure of Miami Dolphins long snapper Blake Ferguson. The task force member reposted the tweet, commenting, “Put assault weapons only in the hands of Federal employees who are currently weaponizing them? Yep, kick some rocks.”

Ferguson is likely expressing his dissatisfaction with the White House's efforts to weaken Americans' gun rights, but at the same time, he may believe that regulations and restrictions on assault weapons could lead to a police or militarized state. Ferguson has never shied away from expressing his political opinions on Twitter, retweeting a tweet from Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance earlier this week. He has also voiced his dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden on multiple occasions since June of this year. Most recently, he publicly rejected the idea that supporters of Donald J. Trump are loyal to the new Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris.

A star high school player at Buford High School in Georgia, Ferguson won three football titles before joining the Louisiana State University Tigers from 2015-2019. A two-time team captain, Ferguson played 52 games at long snapper for Louisiana State, winning a College Football Playoff championship in his final season. During his time with the Tigers, Ferguson recorded three tackles and one fumble recovery.
The Miami Dolphins selected Blake Ferguson with the 185th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Ferguson became the first long snapper to be drafted in the sixth round or earlier since Collin Holba in 2017. No long snapper has been selected in the NFL Draft since 2021, breaking a league record. Ferguson has recorded seven tackles and one fumble recovery in his four NFL seasons. He has not missed a game. In 2023, Ferguson signed a three-year, $4 million contract extension.
