Trey Lance started in Saturday's preseason game for the Dallas Cowboys, but it's fair to say his performance was inconsistent.
The No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft threw for 323 yards on 67.3% of his passes but also threw five interceptions in a 26-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
He was also the team's leading runner, rushing 11 times for 90 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown.

His first interception came at midfield in the second quarter. During the team's first drive of the third quarter, Lance led the team into the red zone, but threw his second interception of the game while trying to get a touchdown.
After Dallas scored on its next two drives, Lance's final three drives ended in interceptions, including interception six. All three of those interceptions came in the final 4:14 to go, with the final interception coming on the final play of the game.
The Cowboys were at the Chargers' 20-yard line looking to tie the score, but Lance's pass to the end zone was caught by Chargers' Robert Kennedy.

It's been a tough career for Lance, who was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, who moved up from 12th to third overall to acquire the player seen as the successor to Jimmy Garoppolo.
After taking over the starting role in 2022, Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2 and the emergence of Brock Purdy has seen Lance sidelined.
San Francisco traded Lance to Dallas in exchange for a fourth-round pick almost a year ago.

As of now, Lance is expected to be the No. 3 quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. The Cowboys declined his fifth-year option on Lance this offseason, making him a free agent at the end of the year.
