TROY, Alabama — The Troy baseball team will be competing on the international stage this fall, with senior Blake Cavill being named to Australia's squad for the 2024 U-23 World Cup in Shaoxing, China.
“It's going to be an amazing experience to represent my country and the Troy baseball community,” Cavill said. “I'm truly blessed and honored.”
The Sydney, New South Wales native is no stranger to international competition, having represented Australia at the 2015 Little League World Series, 2016 U-15 World Cup and 2019 U-18 World Cup.
“Whenever a player or coach has the opportunity to represent their country, we explore every way to make that happen within our program,” said head coach Skylar Mead. “Blake's fourth international appearance is a testament to his skill and passion for his native Australia. We're excited to follow him in the Classic this September, but look forward to welcoming him back to Troy as we embark on an exciting season in 2025.”
Cavill, a 6-foot-1, 245-pound first baseman, transferred to Troy from Western Kentucky this fall. Cavill had a productive season with the Hilltoppers, batting .313 with a .970 OPS, eight home runs and 47 RBIs. He began his collegiate career at Northwest Florida State University, batting .379 with a 1.174 OPS and 15 home runs as a sophomore.
Group matches will take place from September 6-10, with Australia facing Colombia, Puerto Rico, Japan, Great Britain and China in Group A. The Super Round will be held from September 12-14, with the medal games on September 15.
