PHOENIX (AZFamily) — HonorHealth is helping provide hands-on trauma care to military members through lifelike simulation.
The training facility, located at Osborn Medical Center, is 15,500 square feet and includes a simulation room for personnel to complete their training.
“If there's a situation where we have to deploy them overseas, this is the group that's going to be deployed, so this training is really important for them,” said Roxanne Flynn, HonorHealth's director of military and community engagement.
From fake blood to high-tech mannequins that breathe and interact with trainees, the goal is to put trainees in high-stress situations and conduct simulated training exercises to better prepare them to provide critical care on the battlefield.
“They're thinking critically with a lot of anxiety and they need to do that on the battlefield, so we try to mimic that here and make sure they get the best experience possible,” Finn said.
The program has helped train more than 3,500 soldiers and airmen in trauma and deployment skills since 2004. The program is completely free to these personnel.
“We don't have a Level 1 trauma center in the military in the United States. We have Level 1 trauma centers in the civilian world. So when we bring the military into a Level 1 trauma center and we collaborate on treating patients, the military learns about different ways of treating battlefield medicine,” Flynn said.
