BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University has strengthened its position as the nation's best university for online education, according to U.S. News & World Report, which named the university to its “Best Online Programs for 2024” rankings released Feb. 7.
App State Online was ranked in the top 23% of best online bachelor's programs among universities in the U.S. The national publication also recognized App State's Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Nursing programs and online Master of Science in Education.
Top Bachelor's Programs in Business
As part of its “Best Online Bachelor's Programs” ranking list, U.S. News recognized App State as one of the nation's top schools offering the best online bachelor's programs in business. This is the fourth consecutive year that App State has held this honor. The university ranked within the top 20% of schools listed.
App State's online BSBA degree programs in Business Administration and Supply Chain Management offer students the flexibility to complete their degrees full-time or part-time, according to their own schedule. App State also offers a BSBA in Business Administration and a BSBA in Supply Chain Management at its Boone and Hickory campuses.
44 positions gained in MBA program
The university's internationally recognized online Master of Business Administration program ranks in the top 18% of recognized schools in U.S. News' 2024 “Best Online MBA Programs” ranking list, up 44 spots from the 2023 ranking.
App State's flexible online MBA offers the same high-quality curriculum as our on-campus MBA program, with the opportunity for students to work closely with faculty. The 36-hour program is designed to be completed in two years, but students can take classes at their own pace.
Master's degree programs ranked among the best
Appalachian State University's online graduate programs were also recognized by U.S. News' “Best Online Programs for 2024” rankings, with the university's master's degree programs ranking within the top 28 percent of schools included on the ranking list.
App State offers eight online graduate programs through the Reich College of Education.
National Best in Nursing

With an emphasis on educational creativity, nursing practice, leadership and research, App State's online Master of Science in Nursing prepares graduates for educator roles in practice settings or academic positions in nursing programs.
U.S. News evaluated 1,752 online bachelor's and master's degree programs for the 2024 rankings. Factors considered in the rankings include student engagement, services and technology available to students, faculty qualifications and training, and peer reputation. For schools offering online master's programs, student excellence was also taken into account.
App State's online enrollment (undergraduate and graduate) has grown for the fourth consecutive year, with the largest number of online students ever enrolled in fall 2023. From fall 2022 to fall 2023, online student enrollment grew by more than 16%, with App State's online students making up approximately 10% of App State's total student population.

Schools that received a final score of 85.86% or higher made the list.
