“Bayfront marks a milestone in our ongoing investment in the community to advance innovation in both the care we provide and our patients' overall journey.”
Suresh Gunasekaran, president and CEO, UCSF Health
The addition of six new primary care physicians will expand capacity to serve approximately 20,000 primary care patient visits annually, and will also provide a range of services connected to primary and urgent care, including 14 operating rooms for outpatient surgery, 15 specialty procedures, a radiology imaging suite, a physical and occupational therapy gym, a retail and compounding pharmacy, and a lab for blood draws. This all-in-one care will create a more convenient, patient-centric experience.
“Every aspect of this care center has been meticulously designed with our patients' needs in mind, allowing them to receive comprehensive care in their own neighborhood, in one place,” said Inga Renes, MD, MPH, MBA, senior vice president of Ambulatory Services at UCSF Health. “Whether it's a routine checkup or a more serious issue, our caregivers will ensure patients get the care they need, when they need it, so they can sleep in their own beds that night.”
Bayfront will also be home to San Francisco's largest outpatient surgery center, featuring state-of-the-art technology allowing for procedures to be performed without the need for an overnight hospital stay. Four of Bayfront's 14 outpatient surgery rooms are dedicated to eye care, offering cataract and corneal surgery, laser vision correction and glaucoma surgery, and will seamlessly integrate with appointments at the neighboring Wayne and Gladys Valley Vision Center.
The emergency room will be able to treat up to 16 patients at a time, providing space for timely treatment of non-urgent but important issues such as sprained ankles, sore throats, earaches, etc. The emergency room will be open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, helping to fill a gap in same-day care that has long strained the city's emergency departments and inpatient facilities, and will eventually expand to 16 hours a day.
Medical specialties within the building include allergy, audiology, cardiology, dermatology, otolaryngology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hepatology, neurosurgery, pain medicine, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, pulmonology (interstitial lung disease), rheumatology, urology and vascular surgery.
Integrated care in a bright, efficient space
The five-story, all-electric, 181,000-square-foot building at 520 Illinois Avenue was designed with wood trim and light-filled spaces, with paintings and murals by local artists brightening hallways and exam rooms to provide a soothing environment for patients.
The building is accessible by public transport and adjacent to a new nine-storey car park. The Bayfront Medical Building features comfortable indoor and outdoor seating and sculptures, a lactation room and a café.
“Everything we do at UCSF Health is grounded in our shared belief that health care is a human right and that everyone deserves the best health care in a compassionate, healing environment,” said Gunasekaran. “Bayfront marks a milestone as we continue to invest in our community to advance innovation in both the care we provide and the overall patient journey.”
