New European Council President Antonio Costa and EU Foreign Affairs Minister Kaja Callas arrived in Kyiv on Sunday. This is the first day of their new role in the EU structure. “We reaffirm our unwavering support for the Ukrainian people,” Costa said.
“From the first day of the war, the EU has been on the side of Ukraine,” Antonio Costa wrote on the X platform, attaching a photo with Kaja Callas to his post.

The former Portuguese prime minister has been president of the European Council since Sunday, December 1, and Mr Callas is head of EU foreign affairs.

A few days ago, the European Parliament voted to approve the new composition of the European Commission. Former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas has been appointed as the EU's High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.
Public hearings on candidates for key posts were held in the European Parliament from November 4th to 12th. The final vote took place on Wednesday 27 November, during which MEPs approved the entire composition of the European Commission. The new team began work on December 1 after receiving formal consent from the EU Council.

“Along with other European leaders, I am satisfied that we have selected the right person for the position,” Donald Tusk said when the candidates were selected for the post in June.
– My priority was to show that Europe is stable and predictable. This is guaranteed by Ursula von der Leyen. Kaja Karas understands the risks posed by Russia and Belarus. He understands Polish sensibilities. The Prime Minister said he also looked forward to welcoming back his experienced colleague Prime Minister Costa as President of the European Council.
