Prime Minister Egede declared: “Greenland is ours. We are not and will not be for sale. We cannot afford to lose our age-old fight for freedom.”
Donald Trump had plans for Greenland
President Donald Trump announced Sunday that billionaire Ken Howery will be Copenhagen's new ambassador. He is a businessman and financier, among others Elon Musk and another billionaire Peter Thiel founded PayPal.

In announcing his choice, he mentioned the situation in Greenland. He said the island should belong to the United States.
“To ensure national security and freedom around the world, the United States believes that ownership and control of Greenland is absolutely necessary,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump won't give up
This is not the first time Donald Trump has expressed a desire to take over Greenland. In 2019, he suggested the United States might purchase the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at the time that it was an “absurd” proposal. The president-elect subsequently canceled his visit to Copenhagen.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, so it is connected to Europe. However, geographically it is part of North America. The shortest distance to the United States is approximately 3,000 km.
Also on Sunday, President Trump threatened to take U.S. control of the Panama Canal because Panama's tolls are “too high.”
