The shooting occurred just before 11 a.m. local time at Abundant Life Christian School, which has about 400 students, Madison police said.
At least three people were killed in the incident, including the shooter, identified as a juvenile, who was found dead by police upon arrival at the school. The identity of the perpetrator has not yet been determined, only that he is a student.
At least five people were taken from the scene to local hospitals.
Another school shooting in America. White House responds
City Police Chief Shon Burns said at a news conference that today is a “sad day, not just for Madison, but for the entire country.”
– Every child in this building, every person, is a victim and will forever be a victim. This kind of trauma never goes away, he added.
Videos published on social media show a massive intervention by police, ambulances and fire engines. A number of emergency services remain on the scene.
White House officials told the media that President Joe Biden was also informed of the tragedy.
Mass shootings are rampant in America. The number of incidents is increasing
In the United States, the number of school shootings has increased in recent years, and gun control and school safety have become major political and social issues.
According to the K-12 School Shooting Database website, there have been 322 school shootings in the United States this year. This is the second-highest number in a year since 1966, according to the database, surpassed only by last year's total of 349 similar shootings.
The mass shooting epidemic affected both public and private schools in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Some were held at Christian schools.
In March 2023, a former student at Covenant School, a private school in Nashville, murdered three children and three adults before being shot and killed by law enforcement officers.
Earlier this month, two students, ages 5 and 6, were shot to death by a gunman at Feather River Adventist School near Oroville, Calif., and later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
