Deputy Defence Department spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said today that US military commanders in Europe had put their bases on heightened alert.
Singh did not comment on intelligence but said the decision by U.S. European commanders to raise the threat level was “a combination of factors and not related to any single threat.”
These factors could impact the safety and security of military personnel and their families stationed in the area, she said.
“U.S. European Command is taking steps to increase vigilance for our service members, their families and installations,” she said at a Pentagon briefing. “This is done out of an abundance of caution. I will not provide further details.”
There are a number of high profile events taking place on the continent, including the 2024 European Football Championships and the Olympics in Paris. “There are a number of different factors converging, including events taking place in theatres, so it's good to be cautious and ensure that our service members are taking the necessary precautions for themselves and their families,” Singh said.
Singh also said that due to poor sea conditions off the Gaza Strip, the Integrated Logistics Land Temporary Pier is currently at the Israeli port of Ashdod. “We are still evaluating when we will be able to anchor there again,” Singh said. “We will provide an update once the sea conditions have calmed down a bit.”
The World Food Programme and other organisations are moving aid to the Palestinians from the sites. “In terms of distribution, some certainly started to resume over the weekend,” Singh said. “It will take a few days to move the supplies out of the sites that have been building up for a long time.”
