In the past, Steam's “New and Trending” tab was a real nightmare. This simple list was once filled with the biggest releases and big sales, but in recent years it has become overrun with free games. Prologues, demos, free games, and everything in between used to fill the tab as soon as they were released, but not anymore. Valve has made a small but welcome change to the Steam homepage that makes it much easier to see all of the free stuff.
Welcome to the Trending Free tab. This is where you'll find Steam's biggest downloads for free. No need to let them molder and take over your other tabs. Popular downloads find a new home here, whether they're demos, free games with add-ons, or completely free experiences. The biggest releases of the day come together under a new banner.
For example, the hugely popular Black Myth Wukong benchmark tool, which has more players than most games on Valve's platform, is right at the top of the list: I know it's not actually a game, but this is exactly why the “Trending Free” tab is such a welcome change for free Steam games and other downloads.
Previously, downloads like Wukong benchmark and viral sensation Supermarket Together appeared alongside paid games, cluttering the tab. Not that there's anything wrong with free games, they'll of course be more popular than many premium downloads. That's why it's smart to separate all the popular free and paid games, so you can easily find the type of experience you want.
Otherwise, Steam's front page would be cramped and paid games would constantly be hidden by a barrage of free releases. Now, popular free releases have their own dedicated tab, making navigation much easier. Head over to Steam and see for yourself. It's much easier to search.
Valve also made some big changes to the demo recently, so we're sure the team will take all of your feedback into account with the new “Trending Free” tab.
