The fire was caused by the wreckage of the destroyed Russian Dawn. The debris of the drone started a fire in Muromets Park in the Desnyansky district in northeast Kyiv. Fires also broke out on some lawns on the Dnieper embankment.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on social media that a rescue team had been dispatched to the scene. There is no information on injuries.
Witnesses cited by Reuters said they heard explosions that sounded like air defense units had been activated in Kiev.
The overnight attack followed a series of Russian attacks on Sunday that damaged buildings and power lines in Kiev. At the end of the day, several people were wounded in the shelling of Kharkov. Moscow has not commented on these attacks.
War in Ukraine. Russia modifies drones. “Another destructive explosion”
Since August, Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine in what Kiev officials say is an attempt by Russia to destroy critical infrastructure needed for winter heating.
Russia has not only increased the number of drone attacks, but also increased its attack power by equipping Iran's Shahed drone with thermobaric warheads. This information was reported by Newsweek, citing the expertise of a team of scientists in Kiev. These weapons were scheduled to be used during the October attack on Ukraine.
Thermobaric warheads release a flammable aerosol just before detonation. During an explosion, the mixture burns with oxygen from the air, resulting in strong shock waves and sudden pressure changes that are lethal to humans.
Tests conducted on debris from the suicide drone revealed it was also equipped with a navigation system made by Russia's Cometa and a control panel made in China.
“It has not yet been established whether this increases the accuracy of the attack, but it certainly causes a more destructive explosion,” the Ukrainian news agency UNN reported.
