Norwegian government wants to build new shelters in case of war or disaster
Norway’s government announced on Friday that it plans to reinstate the obligation to construct air raid shelters in new buildings. This decision was dictated by growing concerns about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. – Norway’s Public Security Minister Emily Enger Meer said civilians must be taken care of in case the worst-case scenario materializes.
Norway plans to reintroduce an obligation to build shelters for civilians within the country. This practice had already been implemented in the past, but in 1998 a decision was made to withdraw similar orders from being imposed on citizens.
This decision is directly related to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on for almost three years. Norwegians, whose country borders the Russian Federation above the Arctic Circle, are constantly concerned about Putin’s aggressive policies.

Until 1998, every major complex in Norway had an air raid shelter. No new evacuation centers have been built since the law was revised. Currently, the government envisages that this requirement will apply to buildings with an area of more than 1,000 square meters.
Officials are currently proposing two types of shelters: those that protect against chemical and radiological weapons, and those that help survive attacks by conventional weapons. The latter will be built in subway stations or garages.
