In an interview with Slovak TV STVR, the country's President Peter Pellegrini spoke about the war in Ukraine. According to the Slovak leader, peace in Ukraine can only be achieved through compromise, in which case Kiev would lose some territory to the Russian Federation.
War in Ukraine. Slovakia's president points out territory when it comes to ending conflict
Mr. Pellegrini said Ukraine would need to make concessions to end the conflict, which escalated about three years ago. – I think we have to be realistic when it comes to peace. There is probably no rational person in Europe today who believes that peace can be achieved without losing some of Ukraine's territory, the Slovak president said in an interview.
Peter Pellegrini also explained why he thought so. He said that the situation on the front, where “Russia is conquering new territory every day,” made him think this way. The politician also called on Kiev and Moscow to come to the negotiating table and start negotiations as soon as possible.
In this context, the topic of changing the tenant of the US White House also came up. Pellegrini said he disagreed with Joe Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russia. In his opinion, it is easier to make such a decision if the country is not in close proximity to the scene of an armed conflict. “In Slovakia we have a completely different perspective,” he added.
The politician also said it was “deeply regrettable” that the European Union was waiting to see what would happen after Donald Trump became US president.
Ukraine – Russia. A ceasefire at the expense of territory and NATO members?
The Prime Minister of Slovakia has a similar opinion. In an interview with Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Robert Fico expressed his belief that “Ukraine will lose a third of its territory.'' – Ukraine has allowed itself to be dragged into a history that cannot end well for the country. He said it would lose territory and not be invited to join NATO.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy suggested in an interview with American television CBN News last week that “Ukraine's membership in NATO can only apply to areas that it actually controls.”
– Diplomatically, you have to find a way to achieve your goals. And our goal is to make peace last and achieve it as quickly as possible, Zelenskiy said.
