The Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation has created a manual describing the procedure for digging mass graves during wartime. According to Russian media, the guide includes rules regarding the depth of the hole, placement of the dead and proper covering with soil.
The manual was developed by the ministry's scientific research institute. The 20-page publication is a response to the increasing death toll of Russian soldiers on the front lines. More than 115,000 people had died in Moscow by the end of October, according to Russian data. Approximately 500,000 soldiers were injured. Ukraine provides larger data, talking about more than 700,000 cases. Casualty of Russian military personnel.
The Russians are losing many soldiers. The military received unusual instructions
According to the instructions, one burial ground can accommodate 100 people. The bodies should be placed in two rows, one above the other, separated by a layer of soil of one meter. The mass grave must be 20 meters long, 3 meters wide and 2.3 meters high. An excavator can be used for digging. The entire operation will take 368.5 hours, or about 15 full days, according to the Kremlin-independent Moscow Time newspaper.
The manual also explains when cremation of bodies is permitted and how to minimize the risk of contamination with chemical, radioactive or biological agents. This document contains not only instructions, but also, for example, a diagram of a correctly constructed burial ground.
This is not the first time the Russian military has been ordered to carry out mass burials. The manual is an updated version of a document submitted to the military in 2021, prior to the invasion of Ukraine.
